Negotiate
Work it out yourself. Listen carefully to each other and reach a compromise.
Mediate
Sometimes people in conflict try to negotiate but are unable to compromise. They may seek help from someone else who is a neutral third party. A mediator will help resolve the issue.
Arbitrate
An arbitrator is also a neutral third party but unlike a mediator, they make a decision about how the conflict will be resolved.
Litigate
Some conflicts are very serious and require the law to help resolve. When this happens lawyers act as spokespeople for the people involved and a judge acts as the arbitrator. Decisions are made based on rules and laws.
Legislation
Sometimes conflicts arise because laws or rules are unclear. When this happens people may choose to make a new law or rule so the same problem doesn’t happen again. This happen a lot with all levels of government.
